STON'D

Ston'd is a metal band hailing from Bangalore. Its story starts in the summer of 2005 when Anoop (bass) and Abijith (vocals) met Aditya (guitars) for the first time in a mutual friend’s jam room. No one had a clear idea about what they wanted their band to sound like. There was a huge difference in influences ranging from Lamb of God to Korn to the ‘80s band Scorpions. Nothing really came out of that first meeting. Aditya got an offer from another band. Abijith went on to do vocals for the nu-metal act Schnellpsyche. After a couple of months, and a couple of chance meetings with the future guitarists of Ston’d, the band was finally formed at the end of 2006. The original line up consisted of Abijith on vocals, Hitesh and Sudhir on guitars, Anoop on bass and Karthik on drums.
Debuting in "Unwind Underground", and after around seven shows, the band saw a line up change with Aditya, who had first met Abijith and Anoop 2 years ago, replacing Hitesh on guitars.
The band has always maintained that with heaviness in music, there must be a perfect balance of melody as well. Technical Guitar riffs and drumming patterns with melodious leads and heavy vocals define the band's sound.
Shows played include "Unwind underground", Campus Rock Idols 2007, and National Law School - Strawberry Fields 2006 to name a few. Ston'd has already played a few out-station gigs, including the 2007 Pondicherry Freedom Jam, which was followed by the Manipal Institute of Technology fest Revels ’07, where the band placed third, and a few college gigs, including the SJBIT and BMSCE college fests where the band placed second in both instances. The band is a regular at the Sunday Jams. They recently finished first at Bishop Cotton Women’s Law College, securing the Best Guitarist and Best Bassist as well. The band aims to play at every show possible, both in and outside Bangalore.
Long-term aims include recording and releasing a demo album.
Says their biggest fan: “Brilliant vocals, mind-blowing guitars, rock-solid bass and perfect drumming. Not only are they the best band that I’ve seen, they’re also the nicest and most down-to-earth people I’ve ever met.”
If you care about none of the above, the music speaks for itself. Headbang on!

album review:
Opening with a bizarre riff, including guitar harmonics that sound more like a squeaky gate and a snare drum that sounds more like someone tapping a pot with a pencil, Gorguts create raw, intense feelings and complex riffs, but nothing stands out on its own and the song structure is merely identified by sections, i.e. this is the fast bit, this is the slow bit and this is the solo. The riff progressions and melodies are occasionally impenetrable and it is nigh on impossible to whistle any of this. We have a limited bio that claims their previous opus _Obscura_ was like nothing that had been done before and that _From Wisdom to Hate_ is a progression of this. What we have in reality is rough and very progressive death metal. The musicianship of this band is in evidence as they almost go overboard on complexity, with time signatures and dissonance aplenty. The sound is dark and ominous in a style akin to Nile. We often get similar-sounding riff progressions in harmonic minor, which creates the ambience. The mix is raw in a way that makes early Deicide sound slickly produced and the drums suffer particularly, with the otherwise tight kick-drums lacking prominence and the gated snare sounding plain annoying when they blast. The guitars lack the razor edge that can mean so much in terms of impact, becoming sludgy, and the vocals are powerful but lamentably monotone. Musically this is occasionally enjoyable and in equal measure not so. The complexity of the music is the most prominent stylistic trait and sometimes this makes for an inspirational musical experience, but occasionally lapses into an unattractive cacophony. Consequently this is only half absorbing, particularly as the songs are lengthy. It is all very extreme and full credit must be given to the effort and craft gone into producing this work, but the quality is variable. I enjoyed "Elusive Treasures" a lot, with its many dark corridors of expression and mood, but found opening track "Inverted" nothing short of a chore to sit through. In many songs, specific sections stand out as the music ebbs and flows with your interest levels. The last track is one of the few that kept my interest and, somewhat tellingly, it was an instrumental. _From Wisdom to Hate_ is dark, extreme and progressive but it doesn't always translate into a vital musical experience. It's good stuff but it has been done better.

album review:
The phrase "Can't blame a man for trying" grabs a whole different meaning when Aborted uses it; this band just keeps trying to win their fans back, you can see them doing the best they can to make people forget about their issues and flaws, they miserably fail though, and add to the pile the fact that, after "Goremaggedon", they keep releasing boring records with dull songwriting and amateurish music.

When this album started I immediately thought "Wow, this sounds interesting enough", then everything went back to normal; Aborted this time kept their new found melody in the drawer for a good amount of minutes, they added some catchy riffs, deleted most (not all) metalcore details, and finally created a boring Melodeath album, yes it's boring and in one word annoying, but it's at least Death Metal. Now, the songwriting still sounds uncooked and watered down, the guitar solos are truly depressing and the structures almost made me kill myself (but why should I, I'm not the one releasing stained underpants), to tell you the truth, the only thing that sounds mildly decent is the drumming, the rest is just ready to be flushed down the toilet.

I'm the first person promoting musical revolution and experimentation, there are only two guys in the world who loved the day when Carcass went from Goregrind to Melodeath, one is Jeff Walker and the other one is me; but this is clearly unbearable. I truly don't want them to release Goregrind again, not even Brutal Death, if they want to keep releasing Melodeath then by all means do so, I just ask for good Melodic Death, not mediocre metal trying to sound like In Flames and Necrophagist at the same time.

After 4 full-lengths the band still doesn't sound like when "The Purity Of Perversion" and "Engineering The Dead" came out, I don't think they will ever hit that jackpot again...they changed their music once, it was ok, but the downward spiral caught them and now they just sound awful and really boring...still, "Can't Blame A Man For Trying" right? At least the artwork and the song titles are very cool...

Deicide - The Stench Of Redemption

The Stench Of Redemption is one of the most intense experiences in modern metal; every single track has a life of its own due to the outstanding songwriting presented, every chord played, every tone reached and every solo completed shows a polished band to the core, Death Metal in its shocking best that's for sure.

There's a huge plus in The Stench Of redemption. This new line-up could be the dream-team of Death Metal; you have two of the most complex guitarists creating all kind of merged leads and solos for the music (written marvelously by Steve Asheim) to become utterly impressive and tinted with the shivering voice of Glen Benton. This is seriously one hell of an ensemble to say the least.

Most of the fanatics already know the tracks presented in the EP ("Homage For Satan" and "Crucified For The Innocence") this songs are amazing indeed, but once you get into the astonishing vortex that this album is, you'll see why Deicide rapidly climbed to the top this year. Those songs that manage to sound versatile yet classic, songs like "The Lord's Sedition" with its progressive connotation, "The Stench Of Redemption" showing super-catchy riffs, "Walk With The Devil In Dreams You Behold" bombarding the listener with melodies and violence at the same time, (just to name a few) are the ones that bring this album to the ultimate climax, a peak that reaches re-playable values where you'll find a better feature each time you push play.

This album is surely a masterpiece and it will surely become a classic record in the future; the only small imperfection is the production that sounds occasionally dry, but when you have a killer album like The Stench Of Redemption things like this become impassive because your attention goes directly to the remarkable music. I highly recommend this album, DO NOT miss this release.

INNER SANCTUM

History: Inner Sanctum is a technical thrash/death metal outfit from Bangalore formed in the early months of 2007. Chintan and Michael, the founder members having played with each other for several years decided to join forces and form a band that would best express their influences in music. Tejas who previously played with Chintan for an old school thrash metal outfit, Premonition returned to Bangalore and was roped in as the second guitar player. In search of a drummer and vocalist the trio auditioned several but zeroed in on Abhinav (ex Illusion) and Gaurav, thus completing the line up. The Music: Inner Sanctum’s style of music is technical thrash/death metal. Melodic leads and phrasing, coupled with technical riffs and aggressive drumming are characteristic of their music and is attributed to the band member’s varied influences and tastes in music. Influences: Atheist, Martyr, Death, Lamb of God, Arch Enemy, Opeth, Coroner, Annihilator, Testament, Nevermore, Pain of salvation, Symphony X, Theory in Practice, Non-Human Level, Behemoth, Slayer, Dark Hall, Behold the Arctopus, Psycroptic, Bloodbath.
